Fr. Mario Buttini, O.S.J.
|
Father Mario S. Buttini, O.S.J. was born in Villa Franca Lunigiana (Tuscany) Italy, on November 30, 1913, the son of Peter and Maria Palladini, he was
the fifth of six children.
Father Buttini entered the minor seminary of the Oblates of St. Joseph in Asti, Italy in October 1926. He was admitted to the Novitiate of the Oblates of St. Joseph
in Alba, Italy, in September 1930 and made his first religious vows in 1931. He completed his college and philosophy studies in Armeno, Italy. While residing at the
Novitiate House in Alba (Piedmont), Italy, as assistant Novice Master, Fr. Buttini attended the Diocesan Seminary in Alba to study Theology. He was ordained in the Cathedral
of Alba on June 29, 1939, the Feast of St. Peter.
Father Buttini came to the United States in December 1939 and was assigned to St. Rocco's Church in Pittston as Assistant Pastor. In May 1945, he was transferred to St. Anthony of
Padua Church in Exeter to serve as the assistant pastor. He was assigned as Master of Novices in May 1946 in Santa Cruz, California. In 1952, he was appointed
Provincial Superior of the Oblates of St. Joseph in the United States. At the expiration of his term of office in 1958, he was assigned to St. Joachim's Church
in Madera, California as assistant pastor. In 1961 he was named pastor of this church.
In 1964, Fr. Buttini went to Rome to attend the General Chapter of the Oblates of St. Joseph. Here he was elected Vicar General. In the General Chapter of 1969,
he was elected Superior General of the Oblates of St. Joseph. At the end of his term in office in 1975, he returned to Pittston where he was assigned as Pastor
of St. Rocco's Church. He held this position until his retirement in 1994. Fr. Buttini presently resides at St. Joseph's Oblate Seminary.
